Do You Have Your Henry County Library Card? September is Sign-Up Month

Libraries Provide An Important Extension to Children's Education and Lots of Free Activities

By Jennifer Sheran, publisher Macaroni Kid McDonough, Stockbridge, Hampton, Locust Grove September 14, 2022

Libraries transform lives through education and lifelong learning. Librarians play an invaluable role in the education of youth by encouraging and giving access to reading.

Reading has been proven to stimulate optimal patterns of brain development, which builds language skills. Studies show that children who read either at home or in the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

Librarians are a key resource for literacy

Librarians are literacy experts. They design programs that stimulate and enrich learning while providing fun and engaging opportunities to learn. They offer an array of activities, from baby story time to toddler and pre-school age (which often include puppets, music, dance and singing), to tween and teen programming as well. These events create a foundation for a love of reading in children, and also offer a connective outreach for parents and caregivers to socialize and make new friends. Best of all, these activities are free!

Libraries offer free activities for the whole family

The creative nature of events that libraries host is remarkable. I am amazed at the variety of FREE programs that Henry County libraries offer. There are activities for every age from toddler story times, classes of all kinds for you, teens, adults and seniors, events and more. Some activities you'll find at our Henry County Libraries include:

  • Story Times
  • Trivia & Games
  • Fine Motor Classes
  • Computer Classes
  • Craft Classes and take home kits
  • Coding, Robotics and STEM activities and classes
  • Dungeons and Dragons
  • Escape Room and Scavenger Hunt activities
  • Movie Marathons
  • Zumba
  • Meditation & Journaling Class
  • Clubs
    • Literary Legos
    • Book Clubs
    • Community Garden Clubs

Libraries are a great way to feed your voracious reading habit. A membership can keep you from going broke buying books.

Fun Fact: The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and a group of his friends, became the first American subscription library. The Library Company, while founded as a membership library, did allow members to borrow books, and so may have been the first truly public library.
