McDonough's New Ghost Tour - There's More Downtown than Meets the Eye

Is Someone or Something Watching? Let Southern Ghost Tours Tell You Tales from Beyond

By Jennifer Sheran, publisher Macaroni Kid McDonough, Stockbridge, Hampton, Locust Grove August 24, 2022

Have you ever been in a downtown McDonough business and got that feeling that maybe someone was watching? On Saturday, I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek of the new McDonough Ghost tour put on by Southern Ghost Tours. The tour company officially opens this Friday, August 26 and will run tours on weekend evenings at 7:00 and 9:00 pm. The McDonough walking ghost tour takes participants to various locations around the square and shares stories of early town citizens, tragedies, and ghost sightings.

What You Need To Know Before the McDonough Walking Ghost Tour

The tours begin at the McDonough Welcome Center. As always, it took us a few minutes to find downtown parking. I’d advise you to arrive early so you can find a place to park and hoof it to the meeting spot.

Although you may get the shivers, a walking tour in Georgia can be hot and muggy for much of the year. Be sure to dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. You probably will want to bring along a water bottle as well. If you’d prefer to enjoy an alcoholic drink to boost your ghost-hunting courage, you can get an “adult” beverage at one of the restaurants around the square in the official McDonough “to go” cup.

Our Experience on the McDonough Ghost Tour

Even though it was our guide Evan’s first official tour, he is an entertaining storyteller who captivated our attention. Evan is also a well-informed guide, who clearly did his research on local historical data, people, and events. As he led us around the square, stopping when the noise of motorcycles or church bells grew too loud, Evan kept us wondering what supernatural beings might also be with us.

We were invited to use a ghost tracking app to see if the spirits wished to communicate with us at the stops. There were some creepy responses. Coincidence? You’ll have to decide for yourself.

On this evening’s tour, we were fortunate to have real ghost hunters with us from the show 33rd Parallel Paranormal. They came with all the ghost hunting gear and sought to communicate with the beyond. There was indication of paranormal activity at a few tour stops that got the hosts excited. The show was filming during our tour, so tune in on August 28 to find out more.

It turns out, McDonough, Conyers, & Covington are along the 33rd parallel which has been known for higher incidents of paranormal activity around the world.

Whether you believe or are more skeptical, the tour is a local history lesson. Though, I’m not going to give away any stories. I know I will look at things a little differently next time I’m downtown and I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for ghost sightings.

McDonough’s Haunted Pub Crawl

Also put on by Southern Ghost Tours, the Haunted Pub Crawl tour is for people 21 and up and reveals the stories of McDonough’s dearly departed who refused to leave after last call. Enjoy some spirits at these purportedly haunted watering holes and learn about the other spirits who’ve made themselves at home.

The Pub Crawl two-hour tour takes place every other Saturday and the $40 admission includes one drink and snack at the first stop.

Disclosure: McDonough Macaroni KID received free admission to experience the tour. This article represent my fair and unbiased review.
