The First National Tour of Mean Girls—the record-breaking new musical comedy produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures based on the hit film—is playing at the Fox Theatre from July 19-24, 2022. Mean Girls is playing as part of Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta’s 40th Anniversary Season, and I had the opportunity to attend opening night. It was a blast!

When the curtain opened, we were immersed in the high school world of cliques, belonging, and self discovery. We are introduced to Cady Heron who grew up on an African savanna, but is now navigating the wild and vicious ways of her strange new town in suburban Illinois. We follow along as this naïve newbie rises to the top of the popularity pecking order and takes on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. Filled with dynamic dance scenes, powerful songs and a lot of humor, the show is truly laugh out loud entertaining.
Mean Girls features a book by nine-time Emmy Award® winner Tina Fey, based on her screenplay for the film, music by three-time Emmy Award® winner Jeff Richmond; and lyrics by two-time Tony Award® nominee Nell Benjamin. Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs. The modern set uses digital screens, along with props, to change from scene to scene, from Africa to the halls of North Shore High.
