By Jennifer Sheran, publisher Macaroni Kid McDonough, Stockbridge, Hampton, Locust Grove March 2, 2022

The year is MARCHing on! See what we did there? Yep, it's true. We're already three months into 2022. Do you need ideas on how to make the most of the month of March in McDonough, Stockbridge, Locust Grove, and Griffin with your family? Finding family fun is Macaroni KID's job, so we are here to help!

Here are 11 things to do in Henry County in March.

1. Dance to the beat

March is Music in Our Schools Month. But why limit it to school? Check out these stories for at-home music fun:

And take the initiative by signing up your kids for lessons. Visit our directory to find businesses offering Music Lessons in McDonough and the surrounding area.

2. Celebrate the Cherry Blossoms

It's Cherry Blossom time! That means Macon is celebrating the 40th the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, March 18-27. Every March, the city of Macon transforms a pink, into cotton-spun paradise as more than 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in all their splendor. Though the Cherry Blossom is not a tree native to Macon, the city is known as the Cherry Blossom capitol of the world and the Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the top 100 festivals in the United States. It features 10 days of Amusement rides and games, fantastic exhibits, spectacular shows, incredible headliners, and fantastic food.

A little closer to home, Conyers is hosting a Cherry Blossom Festival at the International Horse Park on March 26 with blooming cherry trees, games, vendors, food and entertainment.

3. Read a book or three...

March 2 is Read Across America Day, the perfect day to start that new book as a family. Visit one of our local book stores for some great family-friendly reading picks!

Bring the little ones to Storytime at Birdsong Books and there are weekly events for each age group at the local library. Here is a fun reading challenge for your family and friends. Who can read them all first? Have everyone list what they read and have a group discussion.

4. Embrace National Nutrition Month

Did you know March is National Nutrition Month? Make it fun for the whole family by including everyone in the kitchen.

Pick up some fresh produce at Knight's Market, Thompson Market, McB's Fresh Produce and Reece's Farmer's Market. Plus it is almost strawberry picking time at Southern Belle Farm! You can always find seasonal produce, gifts and goodies, and fresh bakery items in the Southern Belle Country Market. When kids pick out fresh produce, they will be more likely to try them when you get home.

These easy fish tacos are a great dinner for the kids to help put together in assembly line fashion.

5. Attend some Spring craft shows

Support local artists, get inspired, or learn a new craft! There are several craft shows happening this month to get your creative juices flowing.

This weekend, March 5, McDonough Presbyterian Children's Academy is hosting a Spring craft fair. Enjoy the wares of  arts and crafts vendors, kids vendors, food vendors, and much more!

On March 12,  you'll want to go to the Sharon Church Spring Craft Event with 98 different vendors, a play area for children, and food trucks to peruse.

The Atlanta Pinners Conference is taking place March 11-12 at the Cobb Galleria. My mom and I always love to attend this show. The shopping is great but the demonstrations, make and takes, and classes are even better! Its worth the drive up I-75.

The Southern Girl Mart is having its second show at the Hood Street Market on March 19. Shop local small businesses, enjoy live music, and crafted food and cocktails. I went to the first mart and enjoyed meeting local artists and boutique owners. This show is expected to keep growing!

6. Start your Spring cleaning!

OK, maybe this isn't your idea of a good time but we love a good deep spring cleaning. Crank up your family's favorite tunes and give everyone a job to do. Or better yet, think about hiring a cleaning company to visit your home regularly ... it can be a sanity-saver for a busy family!

7. Plant something

It's been a looooong winter but spring arrives in March! Not only that, but March 12 is National Plant a Flower Day! Get to Wilson Bros Gardens or Kathy's Plants in Locust Grove and buy yourself something green. The McDonough Garden Club meets the second Monday of each month at the Farm Bureau at Racetrack road at 7 pm.

Did you know? 77% of high school seniors have never grown a plant that was their own, and about 80% have never picked a fruit or vegetable from a plant! That is a great reason to start a gardening hobby in your home. If you have room for a garden plot or only for a patio container, your children will benefit from growing something on their own.

8. Eat that second piece of pie

March 13 is Pi Day! Make a pie (we love this paper bag apple pie) or get to Crust and Craft, 15th Street Pizza or your favorite pizza place for an amazing slice of pizza pie.

9. Trap that leprechaun

Check out our list of 17 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day With Kids then head out to Conyers for it's St. Patrick's Day Parade (the parade begins at 5 p.m.) Check our calendar for more St. Patrick's Day fun. Your crew will get into the St. Patrick's Day spirit with this delicious Irish potato soup and you can make it in advance.

10. Tip Toe Through the Tulips

Yule Forest is having its first Tulip Festival March 19-20 and I'm looking forward to see the fields in bloom. I've enjoyed watching the tulips spring up on Yule Forest's Facebook page. Walk through the u-pick tulip field, greet the farm animals, take part in endless photo opportunities, shop artisans selling their crafts, partake in the food trucks, and explore a host of Yule Forest family-friendly activities.

11. Get your family walking.

Henry County Parks and Recreation is launching an eight-week Walk A Weigh meet up every Monday starting March 14 at 5:30 pm at Heritage Park. Need some incentive? Check out these 10 fun facts about walking.
