I was born in northern Ohio, where there was always a white Christmas. Although I moved to Georgia when I was 7 years-old, I can still remember being bundled up in a plush snowsuit and winter boots to traipse through the snow in search of the perfect tree. We'd take a horse-drawn buggy out to the field and then walk through the trees until we found the one. Then my dad would cut it down and we'd load it back on the buggy and return to the big barn. Inside the barn, they had seating areas around barrels of fire so we could warm our fingers and sip on hot chocolate while carols played all around.

While a Southern tree cutting experience is much warmer and usually dryer, it still can give your family fond memories of winter adventure. Luckily we have several options within 30 minutes to cut down your own tree. Most of these farms are family run, and some are multi-generational. They usually offer hot chocolate and cider and some have a market of goodies from the farm. You can also pick up fresh greenery for your mantle, table, and mailbox.

Even if you have an artificial tree, it is worth stopping by the farm for the hot chocolate, greenery, and market treats. Plus, it is a good educational opportunity for the kids.
