Ten Things to Do When Starting at a New School

Calm first-day jitters with these strategies

Starting at a new school can be exciting and terrifying at any age. Over the summer, my family moved from the other side of Atlanta to McDonough. My two younger kids, have spent their entire school career with the same friends and now find themselves starting over on the other side of Atlanta.

My oldest is entering 8th grade in middle school and is leaving behind friends she has had since Kindergarten to a new school system, new school, and new friends. She is sad, nervous, and excited. I know she is outgoing and friendly and will adjust but am also aware of the struggles of middle school girls.

My youngest has Down syndrome. He is entering 5th grade. He has been at the same school since Kindergarten and is in a community that loves and accepts him. Everyone knows Joey. He will now start at a new school and we don't know how a new school system will handle his special needs as it can vary school to school and district to district. I worry will he find the same level of acceptance at his new school and make new friends who include him?

We are doing what we can to make the transition easier.

Here are ten things to do to prepare for your child going a new school.

  1. Withdraw from your previous school and request transcripts
  2. Gather identification documents - Social Security card, Birth Certificate, Proof of Residency (lease agreement, mortgage payment stub, recent utility bill)
  3. Register for your new school. Most schools are now having you start the process online. Henry County just opened a welcome center to help assist parents in person.
  4. Download the Here Comes the Bus app and take note of your students bus stop, times of pick up and drop off. Practice.
  5. Make an appointment with the school to take a tour before the official open house if possible. That way your kids can take their time getting to know the layout. See if there is a map of the school online.
  6. Attend the open house and get your students' schedules. Walk through it together.
  7. Be sure to get the necessary school supplies well in advance so your student won't stress over not having something.
  8. Pack their backpack when you get home.
  9. Make sure they are comfortable with their back to school outfit. Find out if your schools require uniforms and learn the dress code before you go shopping.
  10. Plan breakfasts and lunches. Henry County will provide breakfast and lunch free of charge during the 2021-2022 school year.
