Keep Everyone Healthy This Holiday Season with Essential Oils

Top 10 Essential Oils for the Holiday Season and Check Out Our New Line for Kids

By Stephanie Smith December 3, 2019

The holidays are an amazing, and sometimes stressful, time. Essential oils are a great way to keep everyone healthy and happy during this time of year.

Be sure to only use pure therapeutic grade essential oils, especially if ingesting. Essential oils are not FDA regulated, so a bottle marked as “essential oils” could contain anything. I recommend using doTERRA Essential Oils for their purity and therapeutic effects.

You can use pure therapeutic grade essential oils in 3 different ways:

  • Aromatically – Breathing in the oil. You can breathe it indirectly from the bottle (don’t put your nose or mouth right on the bottle), put a drop in your hand and breathe it in or use a diffuser.
  • Topically – Putting it on your skin. Wherever you put oils on your skin, they will get into your entire body’s bloodstream in less than a minute. It’s helpful to put the oils directly where you have an issue like on your temples for a headache or stomach for nausea. For body-wide issues like a cold, you can put them along your spine and the bottoms of your feet. Dilute the oils for sensitive skin or “hot” oils that cause a burning sensation like Oregano, Cinnamon or Wintergreen. Also note that citrus oils are photosensitive, making your skin more sensitive to sunburn. Wait 12 hours before going into the direct sunlight or tanning bed after using citrus oils on your skin.
  • Internally – Eating/drinking the oils. ONLY DO THIS WITH THERAPEUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL OILS. Not all oils are safe to ingest due to their chemical components. If you can safely ingest an oil, you will see Supplement Facts with instructions for internal use on the bottle. If you don’t see Supplement facts, do not ingest.

1. Peppermint

Peppermint is wonderful for opening the airways, soothing the digestive system and energizing the mind. Got a stomach ache from eating too much? Add a drop of Peppermint to hot tea. Add 5-6 drops to your favorite fudge or brownie mix for an added touch of flavor.

Dilute and rub a little on the temples and back of the neck when holiday tension arises.

2. Wild Orange

Wild orange just makes you happy! It’s great in the diffuser for uplifting the emotions and supporting a healthy immune function. It’s also a great cleanser.

3. Clove

Clove is a very powerful antioxidant. It’s warming and energizing. Add a drop to your toothpaste for healthy teeth and gums. Add a drop to a homemade pumpkin pie mix for great flavor with supportive benefits.

4. Cinnamon Bark

Cinnamon Bark supports a healthy metabolic function and immune system. It’s also a good insect repellent. Add a drop to any recipe calling for dried cinnamon (1 drop = 1 tbsp). Cinnamon Bark essential oil is very powerful and is considered a “hot” oil, so a little goes a long way. Be sure to dilute with Fractionated Coconut Oil or Olive Oil when using topically. If the sensation is still too strong, add more oil – do not wash with soap and water (that makes it worse).

5. Lemon

Lemon is very uplifting, which is so important during these darker months. It is a great detoxifier, so add a drop to your water (glass or steel containers only – no plastic) and sip throughout the day. Add to vinegar and water for a strong household cleaner that’s chemical-free.

6. Douglas Fir

The smell of Fir trees is a staple of the holiday season. Douglas Fir is great for supporting healthy respiration and provides a sense of well-being and focus. It’s really nice in the diffuser paired with Wild Orange.

7. Rosemary

Rosemary is a fantastic addition to many of our favorite holiday dishes, and it has a lot of supportive benefits, too. Add Rosemary to an essential oil roller to promote healthy digestion, healthy respiratory function, and relief from mental fatigue.

8. Lavender

Crazy schedules and long to-do lists can create stress and disrupted sleep. Add a couple of drops of Lavender to Epsom salts and add to a warm bath to get relaxed. Rub a drop of Lavender on the bottom of your big toes before bed to help promote a sound sleep (it sounds crazy, but it works!). Lavender is also very soothing to the skin, so add a drop to your favorite moisturizer or apply it to a wound or burn for relief.

9. Frankincense

Frankincense is called “The King of Oils” and for good reason. It is a precious oil that has very powerful benefits and a nice woodsy aroma. It supports a healthy inflammatory response and supports the nervous and digestive systems. Add a drop to a veggie cap and take it internally every day for healthy cellular function. Put a couple of drops in the diffuser to promote a sense of peace. Add to a roller with Peppermint, Lemon and Rosemary topped with Fractionated Coconut Oil to help students focus through a busy test season.

10. doTERRA OnGuard

OnGuard is one of doTERRA’s best selling essential oil blends that is a must for getting through the winter months. A combination of Wild Orange, Clove, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon and Rosemary; this is a powerhouse for supporting the immune system when germs abound. Add a drop or two to water or a veggie cap and take internally or rub on the feet and spine with a little Fractionated Coconut Oil. Make your home or office smell like the scents of the holidays and give everyone an immune boost with 4-5 drops in the diffuser.
