St. Patrick's Day Fun Around Henry County

Around town or at home, we can all have a little luck on St. Patrick's Day

As a person of Irish decent,  I like to step up my game on St. Patrick's Day! We won't talk about St. Patrick's Day in Savannah during my college years. But as a parent, St. Patrick's Day opened up another level of fun. Who would have thought that magical green milk, cereal, leprechauns, and more would create such excitement in kids? Well, trust me, it does! St. Patrick's Day is always one of my favorites.

When the kids were little, we told them about the pesky little leprechauns, who like to cause mischief, and how we might  trap one. Then on the morning of the 17th, I got prepared with my green food coloring!

Before the kids woke up, I would put some food coloring in the toilet tank to surprise the first visitor to the restroom. Then I put a drop into each of their empty cups and also into their cereal bowls before covering it with the cereal - Luck Charms, of course. Then as I called them to breakfast, I would pour milk into a cup and be so shocked when I saw the white milk turning green! The kids quickly became excited and watch in surprise as I poured milk into their cereal bowls. More magical surprises! You can also turn eggs green or even pancakes.

While the kids were at school, the leprechauns usually caused some sort of chaos. Toilet paper might get strewn around the house, furniture tipped or backwards, and a trail of gold coins leading to a treasure of green items (spearmint gum, Junior mints, etc.). Then the kids would enjoy an afterschool snack of fruit in the shape and colors of the rainbow with marshmallow clouds and gold Rollos at the end of the rainbow. You can meet our very own local leprechaun Famous Shamus McDonough's six-foot main street leprechaun!
